The Specimen Dealer: Entrepreneurial Natural History in America's Gilded Age. [REVIEW]Mark V. Barrow - 2000 - Journal of the History of Biology 33 (3):493 - 534.
The post-Civil War American natural history craze spawned a new institution -- the natural history dealer -- that has failed to receive the historical attention it deserves. The individuals who created these enterprises simultaneously helped to promote and hoped to profit from the burgeoning interest in both scientific and popular specimen collecting. At a time when other employment and educational prospects in natural history were severely limited, hundreds of dealers across the nation provided encouragement, specimens, publication outlets, training opportunities, and (...)

Hormonal Mechanisms for Regulation of Aggression in Human Coalitions.Mark V. Flinn, Davide Ponzi & Michael P. Muehlenbein - 2012 - Human Nature 23 (1):68-88.
Coalitions and alliances are core aspects of human behavior. All societies recognize alliances among communities, usually based in part on kinship and marriage. Aggression between groups is ubiquitous, often deadly, fueled by revenge, and can have devastating effects on general human welfare. Given its significance, it is surprising how little we know about the neurobiological and hormonal mechanisms that underpin human coalitionary behavior. Here we first briefly review a model of human coalitionary behavior based on a process of runaway social (...)

This study examines the family environments and hormone profiles of 316 individuals aged 2 months-58 years residing in a rural village on the east coast of Dominica, a former British colony in the West Indies. Fieldwork was conducted over an eight-year period (1988–1995). Research methods and techniques include radioimmunoassay of cortisol and testosterone from saliva samples (N=22,340), residence histories, behavioral observations of family interactions, extensive ethnographic interview and participant observation, psychological questionnaires, and medical examinations.Analyses of data indicate complex, sex-specific effects (...)

Evolution of neuroendocrine mechanisms linking attachment and life history: The social neuroendocrinology of middle childhood.Mark V. Flinn, Michael P. Muehlenbein & Davide Ponzi - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (1):27-28.
An extended period of childhood and juvenility is a distinctive aspect of human life history. This stage appears to be important for learning cultural, social, and ecological skills that help prepare the child for the adult socio-competitive environment. The unusual pattern of adrenarche in humans (and chimpanzees) may facilitate adaptive modification of the neurobiological mechanisms that underpin reproductive strategies. Longitudinal monitoring of DHEA/S in naturalistic context could provide important new insights into these aspects of child development.

Conflict and Compromise Over Tradeoffs in Universal Health Insurance Plans.Mark V. Pauly - 2004 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 32 (3):465-473.
Despite a consensus across the political spectrum that the problem of the chronically uninsured is in dire need of solution, little progress has been made. Public spending goes to topping up coverage for the elderly, already heavily subsidized under Medicare, or helping people temporarily without insurance because of international trade dislocations, so that it is clear that something is lacking in the case for significantly reducing the number of uninsured persons. In this paper I suggest that there have been two (...)

Employers must determine the types of health care plans to offer and also set employee premiums for each plan provided. Depending on the structure of the employee share of premiums across different health insurance plans, the incentives to choose one plan over another are altered. If employees know premiums do not fully reflect the risk differences among workers, such pricing can give rise to a so-called “death spiral” due to adverse selection. This paper uses longitudinal information from a natural experiment (...)

Lessons to Improve the Efficiency and Equity of Health Reform.Mark V. Pauly - 2012 - Hastings Center Report 42 (5):21-24.
The recent Supreme Court decision on several provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides an opportunity to address two kinds of design flaws in the legislation whose correction would both improve economic efficiency and some important dimensions of equity. The Court's view that the mandate is a tax is consistent with the general economic view that defines a tax as “a compulsory payment for public purposes.” This was the viewpoint I took in my earlier work as well. (...)

Practice Guidelines: Can They Save Money? Should They?Mark V. Pauly - 1995 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 23 (1):65-74.
To achieve lower medical spending with as little reduction as possible in good outcomes, practitioners and policy makers alike have been experimenting with the use of practice guidelines. These guidelines both recommend certain types of therapies and proscribe others in the treatment of patients with particular conditions. This paper explores the question of whether guidelines which do reduce total resource costs of medical care to a population will be feasible and produce “acceptable” results. The definition of acceptable is part of (...)
